Guideline

You will be required to upload three blog stories. Each blog story needs to 1) provide useful information to possible readers (e.g., students who are taking oral communication classes, faculty members who teach oral communication classes, anyone who is interested in oral communication classes at the UWSP, etc.), 2) be conversational, 3) use multimedia (photos, video clips, etc.), and 4) include useful hyperlinks and tags for readers. Every blog story should exceed 200 words but should not exceed 500 words. There will be two blog skill sessions at CAC 301. You need to attend at least one blog skill session. Sign up sheet will be distributed in class.

Blog Story I: What is oral communication to me? (Due: January 9, Monday, 11:00 PM)

  • You need your own title (Should not be “What is oral communication to me?”).
  • You need to point out specific lessons obtained from lectures, class discussions, group discussions, or your own speech experience.
  • Include at least one photo (your own photo, class photo, university photo, etc.). You need to get permission if you have someone other than yourself in the photo.
  • If you link your YouTube video (1 minute oral description of your blog story I content), you will get 10 extra credit points (out of 1150 total). Sony Bloggie is available at the IT help desk (LRC 023).
  • You should include hyperlinks, which will be useful for readers.
  • You should include tags, which are keywords for your story.

Blog Story II: You need to watch one TED video clip at http://www.ted.com/ and critique it based on the lessons from the course. (Due: January 13, Friday, 11:00 PM)

  • You need your own title (Should not be “Lessons from XXX Speech” or similar).
  • You need to embed the TED video clip on your blog post. You need to provide your critique based on what you know about effective presentations as well as identify what worked well in this presentation and what could be improved. You should include hyperlinks, which will be useful for readers.
  • You should include tags, which are keywords of your story.

Blog Story III: You need to attend a community or campus-based presentation outside of class and post a critique. Examples of potential presentations include 1) a guest speaker on campus invited by the university, a college, or department, 2) a local religious sermon, 3) a city hall meeting where someone is making a proposal or presenting an argument against a proposal, 4), a sales presentation to a large audience, or 5) Toastmaster’s, Lion’s Club, Optimists Club, or other non-profit or community group meeting where a speaker is invited to give a presentation. (Due: January 19, Thursday, 11:00 PM).

  • You need your own title (Should not be “XXX presentation report” or similar).
  • You need to provide a brief overview of the general purpose, central idea, and main points this individual communicated during the presentation.
  • You need to provide a critique using what you know about effective presentations as well as identify what worked well in this presentation and what could be improved.
  • You need to take at least two photos of the presentation and include them on your blog posts. You need to get written permission for the photo from the speaker or the organization.
  • You should include hyperlinks, which will be useful for readers.
  • You should include tags, which are keywords of your story.
